ABOUT SOUL TRAIN

THE TV PROGRAM

“LOVE, PEACE AND SOUL”

Soul Train was an American TV music and dance variety’s show from the 70’s. Created by Don Cornelius, the program was revolutionary for its time. It’s foundations came from refusal to accept and comply with racist bigoted media and culture. It lifted up, celebrated, and showcased black culture, trends in dance, music and dress from that time. It became hugely popular for a wide variety of audiences and ran for 35 years! It was an indispensable platform for musicians, showcasing music like R&B, Soul, Dance, Pop, and Hip Hop. It gave Artists like Run DMC national exposure and had many talented acts like the Jackson 5, James Brown and Aretha Franklin to name a few. The dancers, however were the highlight of the show. They wore brightly colored clothing, bell bottoms, and platform shoes. Through dance, they exhibited a joy, confidence, and personality that was palpable to audiences across the nation. Through Soul train, many trends were set and many careers were started. Soul Train last aired in 2006.  An end of an era but it’s memory will live on!

In Memory of the late great Tyrone “The Bone” Proctor

Tyrone is recognized as a “New York legend of Hip Hop.” He was a dance pioneer of the 1970’s. He popularized a dance style called waacking and made history on a dance TV show called SOULTRAIN. Waacking is a form of dance that embodies confidence, using intentional striking arm movements and body poses, it allowed people to express themselves in a different way. This dance was originally mainly used in the underground LGBTQ dance clubs in the 70’s. Tyrone has helped this style of dance grow from underground to the global mainstream dance phenomenon it is today. In 2019 Pound It Hip Hop Studio had the pleasure training with Tyrone and the very first Soul Train Gala was created. The event was such a success that Tyrone said “we should do this every year.” Sadly, in June 2020, Tyrone passed away at the age of 66. Since the event was such a success we couldn’t resist doing it again. This time, we know Tyrone will be there with us in spirit.

Featuring Princess Lockerooo

Princess Lockerooo aka “The Queen of Waacking” has dedicated her career to keeping the dance of Waacking alive. She was mentored by the legendary Tyrone Proctor and now helps to carry on his legacy. TV appearances include “So You Think You Can Dance” and “America’s Got Talent” to name a few.  She is an artistic women of many talents and travels the world teaching waacking and the art and history behind it. Her students learn how to feel confidence through connection and movement with the music. We are so excited that she will be coming to dance with Pound It Hip Hop Studio this March and will be at our Gala to continue to share the style, history and energy of this dance.

Gala Tickets Include

Prime Rib Buffet Dinner, Dance Entertainment, Soul Train Line Experience, Princess Lockerooo, Live DJ, Selfie Photobooth, and Dance
